How Much Does Storage Insurance Cost?

Self-storage units

The price of storage insurance depends on one main thing: how much you want to cover. The higher the value of the belongings in your unit, the higher the premium. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what you'll pay — and how that compares to buying insurance from your storage facility.

The table below shows indicative annual premiums at common cover levels. All prices include Insurance Premium Tax (IPT). There is no excess on any claim.

No excess on any policy. If you make a claim, we pay the full amount. There's no excess to find out of your own pocket — unlike some competitors who carry a £250 excess.

How much does your facility charge?

Most storage facilities don't publish their insurance prices upfront, but independent research consistently shows facility-sold policies cost significantly more than buying direct from a specialist insurer. A typical facility price for £5,000 of cover is £60–£100 a year. The same level of cover with cover4storage starts from around £25.

Based on research by Proinsight (July 2025), cover4storage customers save up to 70% compared to the price charged by their storage facility.

How does it compare to other storage insurance providers?

We regularly check the market. Here's how our prices compare to the other main independent storage insurance providers in the UK, based on sample quotes at the same cover levels:

What affects the price?

The main factors are:

  • Cover level — the total replacement value of everything in your unit. This is the biggest driver of price.
  • Policy duration — you can choose 3, 6, or 12-month policies. Annual policies work out cheaper per month.
  • The facility — must be purpose-built for self-storage in England, Wales, or Scotland, with CCTV and fire alarms in place.

There are no other variables. Your age, your postcode, and the contents of your unit don't affect the price — only the cover level and duration you choose.

How do I choose the right cover level?

You should cover the full replacement cost of everything in your unit — not what you paid originally, but what it would cost to replace each item at today's prices. This matters because most items depreciate over time, but replacing them still costs money.

A rough guide for common storage scenarios:

  • One room's worth of furniture and boxes: £3,000–£5,000
  • Full flat or small house contents: £8,000–£15,000
  • Large house contents or valuable items: £15,000–£25,000+

If you're unsure, make a list of everything in the unit and estimate replacement costs. It's better to be slightly over than under — under-insuring means you won't be fully compensated if you have to claim.

Is there anything cheaper?

Among dedicated UK storage insurance providers, cover4storage is consistently among the cheapest — and the only one with no excess. Buying from your storage facility will almost always cost more. The only scenario where you might pay less is if your home contents policy genuinely covers off-site storage at the level you need — but this is worth verifying carefully before relying on it.
